THE SAPPHIRES SOUNDTRACK

#1 ON NATIONAL ARIA CHART

The infectious feel good film and soundtrack have been embraced by Australian audiences all over the country with box office figures reaching over $3.6 million in the first week and the soundtrack topping the Australian music charts.

Set in 1968, music is integral to the feel good Aussie film that follows four young Aboriginal girls; ‘The Sapphires’, through a turbulent time in history set to the backdrop of some of the greatest hits of the era.

The Soundtrack features all the songs from the film with one of the film’s stars, Jessica Mauboy lending her incredible vocals to many of the tracks including soul classics such as What A Man, I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch), Land of 1000 Dances and Who’s Loving You and the catchy first single, Gotcha, an original song penned (with Louis Schrool and Ilan Kidron from the Potbelleez) for the film, which draws it’s inspiration from the sounds of the 60’s.

Commenting on the success of the album, Sony Music Chairman & CEO Australia & New Zealand and President Asia, Denis Handlin AM said;

“It is true testament to the quality and enduring nature of these songs and how well they work in capturing the essence of the film, that makes this soundtrack so special. I am particularly proud of Jess who has proven time and again she is a true artist, capable of versatility and delivering powerful performances that connect with the audience. This film and album have the ability to resonate with all fans of music in a truly unique way”.

Troy Lum, Managing Director, Hopscotch Films also commented: “THE SAPPHIRES movie continues to go from strength to strength at the cinemas with the film grossing 3.6M by the end of the first week. All across Australia audiences are cheering after screenings and dancing in the aisles- the feedback has been extraordinary”.

Making it’s debut at the midnight screening at the Cannes International film festival, THE SAPPHIRES received a standing ovation following a special Gala Screening. The only Australian feature film selected for this year’s festival, THE SAPPHIRES is already making waves around the world with The Times describing the soundtrack as;

“…an infectious collection of soul classics. This is the kind of film that makes you want to leap from your seat and shout for joy”. The Times, May 25, 2012.

Directed by Wayne Blair and starring Chris O’Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, and introducing Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell, THE SAPPHIRES is inspired by the true story of four talented singers from a remote Aboriginal mission who are discovered by an unlikely talent scout (O’Dowd). Plucked from obscurity and branded as Australia’s answer to The Supremes, THE SAPPHIRES grasp the chance of a lifetime when they’re offered their first real gig - entertaining the troops in Vietnam. For the girls, a whole new world of sex, war, politics and soul opens before them.

THE SAPPHIRES is a triumphant celebration of youth, courage, love, family & Soul.
