Channel Nine Announces Underbelly: The Golden Mile

Following on from the overwhelming success of the first two series of Underbelly, Channel Nine has commissioned Screentime to produce a third series of the gripping Australian drama.

Underbelly: The Golden Mile

Sydney, Kings Cross, 1989

The cops were bent and the crims were cool. And together they ran the most exciting street in Australia.

Strippers, gamblers, gunmen, dealers, bouncers, bagmen — they all came to the Golden Mile.

A smart and sexy young Kim Hollingsworth, smiling teenage Kings Cross identity Johnny Ibrahim, the Bayeh Brothers, Trevor Haken, Chook Fowler ... the Golden Mile was their playground, and they played like there was no tomorrow. Then, in 1995, "tomorrow" came and the Wood Royal Commission cleaned out the Black Empire within the NSW Police.

But it left behind a mess that took years of mayhem to bring under control.

Underbelly: The Golden Mile is the story of the excesses of the empire, the collapse of the empire, the chaos that followed, and the ultimate victory of strong and honest police ... seen through the eyes of some of the most sexy, charming, corrupt and deadly people of the time.

Production has commenced and filming is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Jo Horsburgh, Executive Producer and Nine's Head of Drama said, "I'm thrilled that we're bringing a third series of Underbelly to the Nine audience. Once again this is a completely new story, with engaging characters who will thrill and entertain us. There are also some familiar faces from series two returning whose story continues into this series. I'm very excited about Underbelly 3, it's shaping up to be one of the best yet."

Des Monaghan, Executive Producer said "Here at Screentime we’re satisfied that the characters and stories we have identified for series three will deliver on high expectations of the Underbelly audience."

Production has commenced and filming is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Just to let you all know, we're ex-pats, living in France and missing our hit of 'Strayan Kulcha'. We moved to Dijon late year and were surprised to see Underbelly (series 1) on telly. Awesome stuff. Well, we've just seen the first two episodes of the second series and we're already having withdrawal symptoms waiting for the rest. To know that there's a third coming out will keep us on our toes as the weather starts to cool over here next year. Keep 'em coming... Oh, and 'Kiwi ***' doesn't translate that well in French... Cheers.
I think it is great to see another episode of Australian history about this crimes and what actually happened cause i remember hearing about alot of this stuff back in the day and cant wait till it goes to air
Shouldn't they re-do some of the blue murder stuff, there's been some really good books on it recently and Blur Murder didn't really show all the details, they were tied to the facts a bit, a dramatic treatment is well over due
I am a nana and love Underbelly, can't wait for 3, just hope it doesn't come on to late. I think Nine has done an excellent job, matching the stars to the charactor's. I think Nine is doing a marvelous job in the different variety of shows, especially the Australian content for our viewing.
At Leanne... Are you serious? The nudity is entirely relevant within the context of the series. These people live fast, love hard and aren't afraid of offending people. And besides, what is wrong with nudity anyway, are you that ashamed of the human body? How is it that you're not offended by the scenes of graphic violence (based in reality), but are offended by a pair of breasts every couple of episodes? It constantly amazes me that no-one complains of all the terrible violence on the news and primetime, but as soon as someone shows some skin they go blue in the face screaming at anyone who'll listen. Don't go to europe, you might have a heart attack.
Underbelly 3 will hopefully be as good as the first 2 series, but you can't really say that to remove the sex and nudity would make it crap. This is how the crims lived - sex, drugs, violence, parties, pure unadulterated sin. That's why it's depicted in such a way, it's an accurate representation of their lives. Sure it's sensationalised, sure it's uncomfortable watching it with mum, but it's a great show, and season 3 will hopefully prove to continue to be great.
series 1 & 2 were fantastic, even tho im in scotland on the other side of the planet, loved them, was the nudity really that bad??? i dont think so, channel 9 should really think about taking it overseas, no one over hear has heard of underbelly but im sure the uk audience would love them all! i did! makes me wonder what other great tv im missing
I just finished watching Underbelly 2, very excited about the 3rd, before I watched season 2 I heard everyone complaining about all of the nudity.. I honestly didn't think it was too bad. Most of it involved the character of Terry Clark, who was known in real life as a womaniser, so I think this was vital to the story to properly show who Terry Clark was. I think it just makes the show better!!
I hope that this series concentrates on the story more than naked girls in every scene. It was just too much and even my husband thought so. There was no need for it, so hopefully they will take note.
Yeah, you're right. Still a good watch though, in my opinion.
